The concept of Zero-Food-Miles

Zero-Food-Miles  is the distance traveled by some food from the production to the consumptionplace , evaluating its impact on the environment ,in particular the emission of carbon dioxide increases the level of pollution. According to the Zero-Food-Miles philosophy, it is advantageous to consume local products as a means to close the gap to help the environment, promote regional food heritage and drive prices down , as well as ensuring a fresh, healthy and seasonal product. Interrupting, that way,  that chain that was born with the big distribution, which works with large numbers, at the expense of the rediscovery of the consumer-producer relationship. As Zero-Food-Miles is sensitive to the reduction of the energy used during the production, besides reducing the presence of carbon dioxide in the air, it leads to a responsible consumption of the territory, making the consumer rediscover his  own  territorial  identity through  traditional dishes. It is a way to oppose the standardization of the product, cheprovoca increased productivity by losing diversity. The origins of the brand Zero-Food-Miles

It’s called “chilometro zero” project, the operation launched by Coldiretti Veneto through which we want to convince managers of public canteens, chefs and large retail distribution to offer consumers preferably seasonal products of the territory. There are already agricultural markets distributed over the territory of many Italian regions, especially in the north, where typicalness are sold without intermediaries, no packaging and no conservation cost. As proved by  raw milk vending machines’ success, which are more and more widespread because they promote a conscious purchase and the safety of the traceable product . Veneto is the region that has started the campaign for Zero-Food-Miles, becoming a regional law the no. 7 of 25 July 2008,nationally the first of its kind. The aims of that law, expressly declared in Article 1, are to encourage the use of local products in the activities entrusted to public bodies, increasing, in this way, the direct sale by farmers.

National legislation and European regulations relating to direct marketing and agri-food safety

The direct sale of agricultural products has been, in recent years, the subject of a number of important legislation, which changed the relationship between producer and consumer.

The “law of orientation and modernization of the agricultural sector” (Legislative Decree n. 228, March 5, 2001)

The success that has met the renewed model of direct sales of agricultural products expressed in a complete way the different attitude taken by the farmer to the market and the opportunities it presents and confirms the growing interest of the citizen consumer who is in direct relationship with the production of the ideal condition to ensure that agricultural products have a direct link with the production area. The meeting point between supply and demand, purified by a series of intermediate steps, allows the entrepreneur a more adequate remuneration for their work and the consumer the purchase of agricultural products at low prices more accessible. The impetus for this new type of sale has been given by Legislative Decree n. 228 of 18 May 2001, known as the “law of orientation and modernization of the agriculture “, the rules laid down by this law contains major innovations with respect to previous legislation and in particular for the first time explicitly considers “activities agricultural “the provision of services for the development of the area and the rural heritage by farm and he fully recognizes the multifunctionality. Among the new provisions introduced by d. EC rules on food safety

White book on ailments security

12th January 2000 the European commission presents the white book of the European commision on ailments’ security, purposing to give a fundamental strategic priority inspired to the exigence to assure an elevated level of security on goods. The strategy’s turning point is based on five key-elements:

  • the constitution of an independent authority of aliments;
  • the constitution of a new juridical context, at a communitarian level, that will cover the entire goods’ chain, including the production of animals’ feed;
  • the elaboration of a communitarian context for the development and the management of national control systems;
  • the encouragement of the inclusion of consumers in the new politic of goods’ security favouring the dialogue and the information, paying attention to the theme of security of the goods but also to the importance of a well-balanced diet and to the repercussions from a sanitary point of view;
  • promoting the European developments concerning the security of goods in international contexts, through the commercial partners and the international organizations (Codex Alimentarius, SPS Board).
